Whew, what a whirlwind 2019 has been. We started off the first week of January with a visit from the HULU show “Small Business Revolution-Mainstreet”. The 10 person production team hit the streets of Arlington for a Mix & Mingle with the community Thursday, March 3rd to learn more about our hometown since we had advanced from over 12,000 small towns across America to the Top 10. The next day a prearranged interview happened at my shop where I was filmed teaching the show’s Co-Host Amanda Brinkman how to make the “Arlington” candle. It was such an inspiring experience to get advice and guidance with these marketing experts from Deluxe Corp.
This helped us take our candle business to the Seattle Gift Show, where buyers come from all over to decide what to stock in their shops, hospitals, hotels, etc. We gained some very good accounts despite Snowmageddon happening on day 2 of the show which ultimately cancelled our Evening Magazine interview that was supposed to air before the Grammy Awards. Luckily they rescheduled for the following week and once it aired we were inundated with orders that left us elated and scrambling to fill. On top of it all the snow basically caused the shop and whole region to shut down. I came up with brilliant plan to offer $5 shipping to send candle orders out and it exploded!! I had orders from friends who I hadn’t heard from in years, former Arlington residents, friends of friends and complete strangers who began to follow us after the Evening Magazine segment. It was fabulous!! We ended up having one of our best months of business despite the snowstorms and it also being one of the notoriously slowest months of the year for retail.
Now that the momentum is going strong we have to keep it up which is why we’ve been working tireless hours to update our candles with our new logo and rebranding the shop. It’s this uncomfortable position of explaining to customers who we are as we transition from Reclaimed Heart to Hometown Candle Co. But in the end we know it will all work out.
